Many people are unaware of how powerful their words are, especially when they are directed toward their self.
Let’s be honest, we can all be our own worst critics at times. However, life could be so much better if we could learn to be our biggest cheerleader instead.
When we talk negatively about ourselves, especially over long periods of time, we start to believe the things we say. The problem with this is the fact that we can be overly harsh on ourselves. For example, we may make a mistake while trying something for the first time. Instead of learning from the mistake, some of us may make statements such as, “I’ll never be any good at this” or, “This is impossible.” While it may be easy for these types of statements to slip off of the tongue, it is not so easy to repair the damages that they cause.
Another issue with speaking negatively about ourselves is the fact that it can become somewhat of a habit. This is a terrible habit to have! After all, if you don’t have yourself to cheer in your corner, who do you really have? You may say, “I have family and friends who support me”. While this is definitely a good thing, believe it or not, their opinions do not matter if you are not able to think positively about yourself.
Think of a time that you faced a scary or complicated challenge and were victorious. What do you think it was that helped you through that difficult time? It was most likely positive self-talk, even if you didn’t realize that you were doing it.
The truth is, our minds are very powerful, powerful beyond belief! We can either use this power to hinder us in life or to excel and rise to the top. The key to rising instead of falling is learning how to keep toxic thoughts from flooding your mind and creating negative statements.
The process of controlling your statements is something that will come easier in time. Remember when you were younger and you would say a swear word on accident and then immediately correct what you said so you didn’t get in trouble? You can apply the same concept to negative self-talk. If you catch yourself saying bad things about yourself, immediately replace the comments with positive ones.
It is important that you are aware of the fact that learning how to have positive self-talk does not mean that you will no longer make mistakes. By this I mean, you do not necessarily need to give yourself a pat on the back if you make a mistake in life. What I am saying is that everything should be a learning experience, instead of beating yourself up, find the things you did correctly and tell yourself you will do better next time on the things that you did not.
There is no need for you to talk negatively about yourself. You are a good person and you deserve to be loved by others, but more importantly, you deserve to be loved by yourself!
